I am sorry those who think modern musicians are better are grossly mistaken, let us not forget the likes of Oistrakh and Rostropovich are not only technically and musically more gifted and intuitive but also closer to the spirit of the age in which great classical pieces were written and therefore are better placed to offer more genuine interpretations than their more modern counterparts living in these dark and uninspiring times.

...vorrei vedere in faccia quelle 8 persone che hanno messo "non mi piace"...

I don't agree , Hausmann and Joachim are not bad either :P

Yeah, most of the 21st century classical musicians were inspired by those titans of the past and many were students of them. I prefer the modern ones just because that's my personal prefence. These guys are still talented and great though.

Yes, but what a young whippersnapper like you doesn't realize is that without the titans of the past, you don't have the regular people of the future. Let's use climbing Everest as an example. There were many failed attempts before success by Norgay and Hillary. At that stage, it simply wasn't considered possible without O2. Now, any fool with a little fitness training can climb with a guide. With proper acclimitization, it can be climbed without O2. Because of ground breakers, we get better.

I totally agree. I'm a bigger fan of the contemporary classical musicians of the 21st century. But that's just my opinion.

Profoundly played.

Well... your statement is only somewhat correct. The mastery of cello by Rostropovich in comparison to lets say Yo-Yo-Ma interesting. Rostrpovitch spent 12 hours a day locked in a room mastering the proper technique and intonation. Yo-Yo-Ma on the other hand used a tape-recorder to listen to this sound and constantly work on getting better, after listening to himself. The tools that people have nowadays helps people get better, so the comparison is invalid. Nonetheless, Rostropovich is a titan.

Brahms is really unbelievable!

Fournier has an unbelievable degree of class and expertise.

Progress is an illusion; actually, it's a delusion. PEOPLE are not getting better. WORKS are not getting better. OUR SPECIES is not getting better. The same technology that leads to medical miracles leads to nihilistic nightmares. The only progress is in an individual (Beethoven 1 is worse than Beethoven 9 ie, or his early quartets versus his late quartets). THAT is the only progress - the artistic narrative of the individual.

I would argue that the Fournier/Oistrakh performance is better.
GKJusticar55
Yes, this is very good. However, I think the best performance of this work is by Isaac Stern, Yo Yo Ma with Claudio Abbado and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Royal Albert Hall? I think so. But when? Early 60's?

Ce dernier mouvement ... Hum que c'est bon.

I really like how they both use mostly traditional fingerings, compared to the liberties today's soloists take.

Excellent performance. Does anyone know the name of the orchestra?
