While you are correct that Newton was a believer, it was not the motivation for his discoveries. His motivation was that he was driven to solve questions. For much of his life, he tried to transmutate "base" metals into gold, and prove the Bible was true. Theology was just one of many areas he explored. And to be fair, at a time when most people believed the Bible literally, and were taught it an early age, it's only natural that just about everyone believed in it.

In the end, no one is evil because they believe or don't believe in God, but only because of their actions against others. And for most of history, it has taken more bravery to buck the established religion than to go along with it.

To be fair, I think she was making two comments. One, that atheists are evil, and second, that agnostics are cowards. However, that kind of attitude is one reason this country is so polarized. I do not believe in God, and though I do not agree with many actions and beliefs of believers, I would not call them evil or a coward. I would only ask that Nuclear Christmas and others consider that none of us are masters of our beliefs. They cannot stop believing and we cannot believe.

How about E = mc^2 ? The sunlight that warms your hand is related to the electrons, neutrons and protons that make the atoms that make the proteins that make the tissues and nerves that allow you to feel and reflect on those feelings? Bach relied on the science of acoustics when he wrote the Well Tempered Clavier. Some of the most beautiful curves are described with parametric equations using trigonometric and logarithmic functions. Iterating complex equations gives rise to wonderous fractals!

Religion has been able to fund the arts because they collected from the masses through intimidation. While it is nice that they gave something back, it's not as though religions earned all the money they've taken in.

And he died at 65, in 1750. Easily verifiable by Googling. I hope you misquoted that article. I'm afraid to believe that anyone could get so much misinformation published!

A few corrections are in order. Bach was called in as a consultant to oversee designs and construction, and as a child might have aided organ builders, but did not design or construct organs himself. He did suggest certain stops. He was invited to play some forte pianos by Silbermann in 1736 (which he criticized) and again in 1747, but I don't believe he ever had much access nor did he ever own one. He "sired" 20 children, but except for teaching music, his wife did most of the raising.

Well, maybe so; but in my heart he will always be one of the undead. (Uh, wait a sec, something about that doesn't sound right ...)
