Yea! xD
Cellistandpianist
More accurately, one should comment on a harry potter vid, saying "first 4 notes: dvorak cello concerto 3rd mvmnt"

Thank you Austin for this magical moment of beauty!

So what? The two themes are completely different. And I'm not talking about the piece...

Performers like du Pre or I. Friedman were by *far* more imaginative, in terms of the richness of experience conveyed in the way that a piece drives forward, than Schnabel or Cortot (or Casals or any of the other people named in this thread), but I think Schnabel's abilities were more *reliably* suited to the task of musical interpretation. (And it was Schnabel that got me interested in classical music performance in the first place.)

To *inject* new rhythmic variations and ideas into a piece, and yet carefully keeping this from going over the edge and still keeping structure. So it is a balancing act, and a different kind of performance. The raw experience that it paints is more directly representational.

Now, in the case of Artur Schnabel (piano), everyone can immediately sense what makes this great, it is the way that everything is tightly related together, so that any slight change in any part of it would completely change the whole. Du Pre, Ignaz Friedman and so on are more controversial, since I find it less easy to sense this kind of structure - still it is there, otherwise it would not be a case of classical music performance. But it is intended to do something different:

Musical interpretation depends on a direct contrast between two different ways a performance might vary. In classical music, this is facilitated by the fact that various things are *fixed* (like the score and accents) so our attention can be directed to the nuances. The more arbitrary something is, the worse it is.

Her (Jacqueline's) best performances were not with Barenboim but those that carefully kept the "balance" - e.g., the Saint-Saens with Celibidach, or Dvorak with Groves (the BBC Legends).

Also, it's not very useful to just say that this or that cellist was "overrated" unless you actually break down the criterion to components. There are different "kinds" of musical interpretation. The best analogy is this: du Pre is similar to what Ignaz Friedman was for the piano (as opposed to Artur Schnabel). Jacqueline du Pre is a more "risky" interpreter primarily concerned with the movement of the piece, injecting certain elements that are not obviously part of the internal structure.

Any reason for the caps lock? I would respectfully disagree about du pre and rostropovich. They are among the greatest musicians ever. Along with people such as Shafran/Noras/Hoffman, not to mention people like Piatigorsky/Rose/Feuermann

THIS IS AN AWFUL PLAYING BY DU PRE.BOTH ROSTROPOVICH AND JACQUELINE DU PRE WERE OVERRATED.THE GOOD CELLIST LIST DANIIL SHFRAN ARTO NORAS GARY HOFFMAN KARINE GEORGYAN NATALIA SHAKHOVSKAYA.ROSTROPOVICH CAN NOT PLAY HAYDYN C MAJOR OR SHOSTAKOVICH 2 CONCEROS.ARTO NORAS HAS THE BEST HAYDYN C MAJOR WITH A SLOVAK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

When the violin interferes, it's like a beacon flashing a guide home, and the cello speeds towards it with the orchestra egging it on. The ending is pure bliss and triumph. Dvorak, you sneaky old fiend. And du Pre, keep it up, wherever you are now.

La muerte de esta artista brillante a tan temprana edad fué una enorme pérdida para la música. Ella tenía muchísimo para dar.

Side note: The film "Hilary and Jackie" (and the book it was based on) is based on lies. Search for the article "Defending the Real Jackie", interviewing Christopher Nupen. Also see the sources linked to in the "Personal Life" section of du Pre's wikipedia entry (now updated).

Was born with the ability of a genius, but without the human qualities necessary to give something precious to audiences,as a pianist. As a conductor he is better.
