Loop colostomy would be done to protect a distal anastomosis, yes - some bowel is resected, anastomosis formed, and then you want that anastomosis to heal, so you do a loop colostomy so stool exits before the anastomosis, resting it and giving it time to heal. It is not "better" per say than a temp end colostomy, just is done for different reasons. It is easier to reverse a loop colostomy then a hartmanns.

And why is this better than a temporary end colonstomy?

Why do you do a loop colonstomy? "To protect a distal anastomosis". Is this to say you resect some bowel and form an anstomosis, and above your new anastomosis you do a loop?

Thank you...this was amazing.

Very informative. I'm in second year of the RN nursing program and I got placed at North York General on the surgery floor... these operations are very common! Thank you!

Often times the surgeon can remove a section of the intestine and sew the intestine back together without creating an ostomy. The name of the procedure would usually have something like "end to end anastomosis" in it. You can Google the term, but beware of some of the graphic images that it might bring up. There are several drawings that can illistrate the procedure.

You said in a regular colostomy they just separate the colon and put it through the skin. What happens when they have to remove a piece of the colon?
Lois Wasserman
No
