I like Sol Gabetta's interpretation of the cadenza a thousand times more than the way Rostropovich plays it.

Doch frage ich mich immer wieder, ob so manche Cellisten wissen, was sie da gerade herumröhren. Es ist ernste Musik!!

24 people worship Maisky and Rostropovich.

Her sound is perfect for this amazing piece only thing, I would've liked it a little bit quicker (cough Rostropovich is the best)

Absolutely fabulous performance - at times I thought she was trying to saw the instrument in half - but then it is Shostakovich!!! I can't believe all the bitching and sniping in the comments. Why be so horrible about a musician who has thrown herself into the work with such commitment and outstanding technique? Her intonation was spot on throughout and it was cool and introspective when needed and outlandish when required. Brilliant - wish I could pay 10% as well as her.

That's the only thing I see flawed as well. It could use a little more speed :3

....Okay, but I still think that she's #1. But that's just my opinion! A typical cellist would play this concerto too quickly and with too much vibrato.
Druddigon25
Hahah. Maisky, Wiepelwey, Maruša Bogataj, Du Pre, Rostropovich. Maisky rendention is 1000x more strong and accurate. (Maisky with Thomas DG) This is not bad. But you need strong male cellist for stuff like that.

Fantástico!!!!!

This is great really is , but it just can´t reach mischa maisky´s...

No doubt, Rostropovich set a certain standard for this work that may never be matched. However, as time goes on, I have found that all great music exists to welcome new standards of performance, and I think Gabetta's wonderfully lyrical performance, with its own unique bite, clearly qualifies as a new standard.

While I agree that her techniques are not what one would call "standard", it works perfectly flawless for her. as for head shaking, well, my cat does that all the time and he is not musical...

Потрясающая игра!!!
Берта Райль
Awful, but that's just my opinion.. If you really want to see someone play this piece as it is supposed to sound listen to Rostropovich.. to my ears anyone else playing this piece just struggles with it. Her head always down to the floor, back curled and shoulders hunched, showing tension.. you perform for your audience not for yourself, head up back straight, proper form = better sound.

I´m Impressed. I'm in love with her dynamic, aggressive and very expressive style. I think it is ideal for the Russian spirit that she understands very clearly.

I think one would only have to view Mischa Maisky's performance of this piece to understand why there are so many negative comments.

Version of the piece*

She doesn't have week fingers just small fingers and this is not the best veer
TheZgfzd
What a silly, unjustified and unsubstantiated comment!
