I have said this before, but I absolutely HATE Maisky's Bach - it's far too powerful, he uses a billion times too much vibrato, the tempo fluctuates all over the place throughout, and he basically plays it as if it's Rachmaninov or Brahms! This is supposed to be a dance suite, if anyone tried dancing to this they would fall over!

All people who watches rostropovich cello suite N°1 in youtube says that it is played too fast and also says that mischa version is better because it is slower. here you have. rostropovich was mischa master.... what were you expecting ?

You are quite right. I checked the old version of his. The prelude alone is 5-6 seconds slower than this versions prelude.

There are some elements of improvisation in the Bach Cello and Violin solo pieces, for sure. But not to this degree. It is not a cadenza. Tempi is just all over the place and to me doesn't even communicate the overall lyrical structure of Bach at all. Individuality aside, Baroque musical still has rules even within the improvisational structure and he follows none of them. Not my taste at all. i'd rather listen to Casals, Starker or even MA play Bach.
